FRIENDS OF THE BEAUTIFUL

FRIENDS OF THE BEAUTIFUL

      OUTLINE

Pa Omeje finds a girl dumped in his farm. At first, he
considers taking her to the new priest but decides against it
owing to his apathy to Christianity. The girl grows up to
become Akuomah, a girl of moderate beauty and inquisitive
nature. Owing to a mutual difference, she decides to leave
the village and pursue her dreams of becoming a professional
      writer.

Thus, she abandons her hometown and journeys to the
University of Nigeria nearby. There, she stumbles into
Professor Collins who offers her shelter. When she took ill,
Professor Collins decides to investigate her background, a
quest that would lead him to the nearby village of
      Umuagwu.

There he discovers that the girl in his house was his
daughter, a long-held secret kept from him by the only woman
      he loved - Diana.

Back home, Akuomah faces the challenge of new relationships
and the stress of school life.

The story climaxes when Diana comes back to find her daughter
and traces her back to Collins' house.

In the end Akuomah has to choose whom to live with - her
      father, mother, or foster father.

      PROLOGUE

The maggi cube in her hand would not yield to the pressure from her two thumbs and index finger, this was how Akuomah realized the hamatan had strengthened. The cubes were so strong they almost injured her delicate fingers when she tried crushing the spice into the sizzling pot of Ogbono soup she was preparing for "papa". She ended up throwing the two cubes into the pot, leaving the crushing to the boiling liquid. Although, she relished the taste of her finger after grinding maggi in between them.

"Akuomah!" coughed papa. Another reminder the harmmatan had strengthened.

"It's almost ready, papa", she answered to the unasked question.

Her answer made Pa Orjiakor chuckle: "children of these days, very clever creatures they are! Before you say Jack, they have said Robinson". He looked at the clock  hanging high up the door post and thought how lucky he had been to have a daughter like this in his life. A daughter who has grown to be so wise and beautiful. Yes, very beautiful, he concluded as she made her way into the living room with a tray bearing a plate of hot Ogbono ...

MARY DOES NOT KNOW

September1       September ushered in the last of the rains;  the kind that fell noiselessly and without the fierce winds like in May and June.

May 17        May was when I saw it, the fierce eyes of Soluja the mad man. it had been a cloudy day, one where, the blackness of the cloud thickened, breaking up now and then with thunder and lightening, darkening my mood like charcoal.
i was sitting by the window of the moving bus, lost in thought, what people refer to as being "absent minded," when my eyes met the mad man's. i'd expected to meet a blank expression but what my eyes saw were alert pupils; pointy unblinking eyes  with an air of artistic craziness. almost as if he could see through my fears, past my boldness to dare stare at him. he could see all of my secrets and those eyes,  still haunt me till this day...

June 5           if i turned, she would definitely know i was staring at her and i wasn't about to give her the satisfaction of being admired. low…
